Shizuoka City Green Tea Promotion Initiative for Schoolchildren (Organized by the Shizuoka City Tea Industry Promotion Council)
Fiscal Year 2025 Initiative:
Let’s Drink Shizuoka Green Tea Together!
Background and Objectives
In 2022 (Reiwa 4), the Shizuoka City Board of Education launched the “School Lunch Green Tea” program.
While local elementary and junior high schools provide rice-based meals three out of five days a week, the long-standing tradition of serving green tea from shared kettles had been phased out, leaving milk as the sole beverage provided with school lunches.
To address this from the perspective of dietary education and Cha-iku (tea education), this initiative was established to encourage students to bring their own bottles of green tea from home on rice-lunch days. The primary goal is to foster an intuitive familiarity with authentic green tea in daily life and nurture developing palates from early childhood.
Furthermore, the project continuously provides educational materials covering local tea history, cultural significance, and agricultural manufacturing processes, fostering deeper appreciation and culinary discernment among younger generations.
Rigorous Selection and Company Achievement
For this initiative, tea wholesale merchants handling 100% Shizuoka-grown green tea submitted their finest selections. Following a strict sensory evaluation conducted by a panel of publicly selected judges, 12 tea purveyors were chosen for the program—and our company’s tea was among the selected entries.
We remain fully committed to supporting this initiative, ensuring children grow up appreciating the exceptional quality crafted by local growers while cultivating lasting pride in their home region’s tea heritage.
